TWENTY-THREE

First Aid

Murphy frowned and shook his head. Kaitlyn had taken three attempts to unlock the door to her apartment. “You should have gone to the hospital like I said.”

The uneasy tension in his chest tightened. He’d not eaten in forever, how in hell he had acid reflux was beyond him.

She turned the key and stepped through the doorway. “I’ll be fine.”

He sighed and ignored the ache moving up his stomach. He wasn’t so sure. After Tim and the others arrived, it took hours to clean up the mess. And no matter how much he argued with her, she refused to leave, despite being pale as a ghost. He closed the door and headed for the kitchen.

She flopped on the couch and closed her eyes the moment her head met the pillow. “Do you think they’re going to be okay?”

He stopped to take a closer look at her. The gash on her forehead looked deep. Why didn’t she have that looked at? Not to mention she probably had a concussion. His stomach churned. Bollocks, what the hell did he eat? “Only time will tell.”

“What about Father Paul and Teresa, what will happen to them?”

He rubbed his forehead. Even with blood caked across her face and a concussion, her brain ran a mile a minute. “I honestly don’t know. We haven’t had much success with people involved in organised religion in the past, so I’m not sure how this one will turn out. We might be lucky. The priest’s love for his sister could outweigh his conditioning.”

“What about Mark?”

He dumped her backpack on the breakfast bar. They’d had trouble getting Mark to change. It had taken some convincing, but in the end, the frightened wolf allowed Mark to reemerge. He let out a deep sigh. “I had a hell of a time to get him to open up to me. He’s wracked with guilt over the deaths on the freeway, so it’s going to take a while, but I think he’ll get through it.”

Her voice wavered. “Do you think he’ll end up like Brian, that college student?”

His pulse skipped a beat, and he swore under his breath. Either Joshua or Tim must have told her. They tracked down the teenager who had turned during a frat party and attacked a fellow student. Brian had taken Propofol to try and forget what he had done, but he took too much and overdosed. The poor kid died alone and frightened.

He studied the floor before meeting her worried expression. He wished he had a better answer for her, but he didn’t, and as much as he wanted to shield her from the pain of knowledge, she deserved to know the truth. “I honestly don’t know. It’s going to take time. A lot of time.”

She fell quiet and stared up at the ceiling.

He had a sudden desire to pull her into his arms and reassure her that everything was going to be okay. Catching himself before he acted on it, he pushed the dangerous thoughts aside. He’d been having too many of them lately.
